For those of you in attendance in Happy Valley on Saturday, we wanted to comment on a few observations. We noticed several random things throughout the day, including during the game. Let us know what you saw that stood out to you!
- Perhaps the best thing we’ve seen this season is the 5 person “Men’s Room” port-o-johns that were sprinkled throughout the parking lots. This oversized octagon of urinals allowed 5 men to use the same facility at one time. While the lines sometimes backed up (like the drains around 5pm), there never was a long wait – much shorter than standard bathroom lines. We tip our cap to the genius who invented this. Sorry ladies, you still have to wait in the regular lines but hopefully the men will all use the “Men’s Room” instead!
- Between Lots 12 and 13, there was a drunk guy who decided to fight a kid dressed as The Tin Man, from The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately The Tin Man was victorious because the other guy was given a breathalyzer, cuffed, and thrown into the police car…but not before a cameraman filmed it and he hit his head on the door. Sorry guy, I hope your headache has gone away!
- Ultimate life-sized jenga. These guys don’t play with children’s toys, they built the real deal, for men! Nice work fellas.

- The late arriving student section? For a group that has been called the greatest student section in the country, they sure didn’t show it on Saturday. It was an 8pm kickoff on national television and they didn’t show up early, nor did they fill the section. That isn’t what we expect at Penn State.
- To their credit, the student section was incredibly in sync. Whether it was the fast, slow, or normal waves, they did a fantastic job. Kudos to you for somehow pulling off the “reverse wave” where the student section reversed course and sent the wave counter clockwise instead of clockwise (as seen in the south end zone).
- Again, when the audio system cut off Sweet Caroline mid-song, the student section continued without a problem. No music? No problem! They made their own.

T-bone, I think your picture of the student section is a bit inaccurate. Yes, it was not full at kickoff, I don’t think it was as empty as this picture shows. And not too far into the first quarter, only the last few rows looked empty to my view. I don’t understand why they’re not packed for kickoff every week either….but it was good to see that they were really into the game.
Tom – First, thanks for joining the site. Feel free to send me any questions or comments you may have. Feedback is always appreciated.
I just checked the picture details on my phone to make sure this wasn’t from prior to kickoff and it was in fact taken at 8:08pm, unfortunately. I do have a picture from later in the night that shows several back rows (maybe 5) across all student sections were empty. So they eventually did fill up, but not as I would expect for such a big game (opponent, time, national attention). I agree though, they did get into it and even forced Denard Robinson to call at least one time out. Let’s hope it continues into next week for Joe Pa’s 400th!
